We have backed up a SQL 7.0 database to disk and am now
trying to restore it using the with move option to a
different device and with a different name.
The restore starts and fails after a fairly small amount
of time with the following message:
fcb::ZeroFile(): GetOverLappedResult() failed with error 2
It appears to initially create the .mdf file but deletes
it after the above message is received.
We have searched the web and found very little about this
problem. I suspect physical disk problems. I can restire
other smaller databases to the same device using the same
method with no trouble - but anything bigger fails also.
Anybody had anything similar and what did you do to
resolve the problem.
Thanks
David
I think the first step is to check your hardware (HD and RAID controller if
present) and then go to another issues linked with MS SQL errors... but for
me it's 99% a hardware problems

Yes, data will change both sides. But the application will only allow Inserts both sides, Deletes and Modifies one side. (Hopefully)

File replication via sattelite
Hello.
I need to do replication via sattelite communication. This means: Very high cost (7$/minute), low datarate (64 kbit), not reliable and long delay (up to 4 seconds from a datapackage is sent until an ACK is returned.
I would prefere to do this offline- that is by transfering a file with replication data.
The datavolume shuld be kept to the lowest possible.
A high degree of data partioning is possible in the application.
High degree of autonomy is necessary- only replication once a day.
This suggests merge replication.
But is it possible to that filebased: That is, transfer a file (via e-mail) and then do the merge at the subscriber totally offline?
I would appriciate if anyone could lead me in the correct direction on this. (Or stop me before I reach the edge..)
The short answer is no. All replication types use rpc or port 1433 to
communicate with each other. Going to something as synchronous as a file
transfer will not work.
Note that Exchange essentially does what you are looking for. Exchange
servers send email (IIRC) to each other telling them what to do.

|||Partitioning of data according to subscriber is most easily achieved using
merge and the -HOSTNAME parameter. It is also possible in transactional
replication but more difficult to maintain: you use Transformable
Subscriptions and define a different DTS package for each subscriber.
There is no filebased method of transferring the replicated data, apart from
the initial snapshot files of course, so using email won't work.
Minimizing the data volume is more difficult to determine. Mostly
transactional is less data, but if you had 1000 updates of a single record,
that would be 1000 transactions in transactional replication and just a
single record in merge, so recommending the method 'depends'. You could
measure network traffic in a test environment and compare transactional and
merge for your scenario.

File Protection
Hi -
I'm building a VB.NET application using an MSDE database. I'm working on an
install program for the app, and I'm running into an error with the MSDE
install.
I'm installing MSDE by executing the MSDE setup:
setup.exe INSTANCENAME="test601" BLANKSAPWD=1
DATADIR="d:\data\test601\Data\" TARGETDIR="d:\data\test601\"
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SECURITYMODE=SQL /L*v
"d:\data\test601\MSDE601.log"
The install works without error on my WinXP Pro development machine. But I
get a Windows File Protection error on a 'fresh' WinXP Home computer.
I create the WinXP Home environment by installing WinXP Home from the MSDN
DVDs and then applying all of the Windows Updates from the MS site (except
for SP2; I'll test that one separately). I then install MSDE by running the
above setup, and I get the following Windows File Protection error:
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore
the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Home Edition
CD-ROM now."
How can I prevent this error message from appearing? (MSDE appears to have
installed fine, other than displaying this error.) Or, perhaps more
importantly, how can I install MSDE in a way that does not threaten "system
stability?"
Thanks for your help.

While it may be true that a virus was at work here, I was able to get a
different cause ("known issue") from MS (see below). Just curious: what
virus did your computer have?
- Jeff
Response from MS:
I found that it turned out to be a known issue in MSDE setup or SP3a Setup
that File Protection will pop-up . The root cause is the protected system
file sqlunirl.dll was not restored to its original, valid version because
the Windows File Protection restoration process was cancelled by user
interaction. However on computers with Windows XP SP1 if the dllcache
folder is missing or the contents of the dllcache are empty, then you might
still get the pop-ups even with sp3a.
First of all, upgrade your Windows XP to the latest MDAC 2.8
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...fe3-c795-4b7d-
b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en
Secondly, if above doesn't work, the workaround for this issue is
1. First manually run the dahotfix.exe, which will install/copy the correct
copy of SQLUNIRL.DLL (2000.80.728.0) into the dllcache. (I got the
dahotfix.exe from the sqlredis.exe that ships with SQL2KSP3 in the
x86\other folder. Just right click on this sqlredis.exe and extract the exe
to a local folder. This will give you mdac_qfe.exe. Then again, right click
on mdac_qfe.exe and extract the contents of this exe into another local sub
folder. This should give you a dahotfix.exe)
2. Then run the setup, which should complete successfully with no errors.

Hi -
I'm building a VB.NET application using an MSDE database. I'm working on an
install program for the app, and I'm running into an error with the MSDE
install.
I'm installing MSDE by executing the MSDE setup:
setup.exe INSTANCENAME="test601" BLANKSAPWD=1
DATADIR="d:\data\test601\Data\" TARGETDIR="d:\data\test601\"
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SECURITYMODE=SQL /L*v

File properties for files stored in IMAGE field
Is there a way (in SQL Server 2005 full-text search) to search the
properties (DocType, Keyword, etc) of files stored and indexed in image
fields? I'm searching the indexed contents with no problem but I also
want to search the properties. I know that this isn't possible in
versions prior to 2005 but I've seen referances that 2005 enables this,
I just can't find the details on how to do it. Was it maybe a feature
that got pulled before the finial release?
Hello,

|||Wow, thank you for taking the time to write and post all that.
Unfortunatly I'm getting the same results with your sample as I got
with my own testing. The query with "summary" doesn't return a hit
either. I checked the poperties of the doc file from explorer and from
Word and the "Subject" and "Property1" properties are set correctly.
To make sure the indexing was working I put some content in the .doc
and added it agian. If I search for data in the file I get a hit, but
not for anything in the "Subject" property. I tried "summary" and
"written" with no luck.
Any idea what might be wrong?
Here is my setup of everything that I think could be relavant.
